Bodegas Alvear, Montilla Moriles

Visit our winery

Our wine, a perfect complement and excellent ingredient for the local cuisine

Montilla-Morilescuisine blends the use of fresh local ingredients (olives, grapes, cereals, garlic) with the Jewish, Moorish and Christian culinary influence on local cooking. The result is a sole cuisine where wine plays an important role, both for boosting flavours when paired and as a key ingredient in the preparation of some dishes.

Pedro Ximénez wine is becoming famous and widely used in many dishes, to a large extent, thanks to the importance given to gastronomy in Spain. Some of the outstanding products resulting from this wine are Pedro Ximénez wine reduction, which is a key ingredient for dressing a large choice of deserts, aperitifs and main courses, and other original products such as wine ice creams and Pedro Ximenez jelly, which is a perfect complement for pâté, foie, cheese, charcoal-grilled meat, or toasts.

Worth mentioning is tapeo, an informal way of tasting a wide range of typical tapas of the area while delighting in Fino, Pale Cream or Amontillado, which are served from the barrel by a traditional venenciador.

We encourage you to visit our section dedicated to recipes, where you will find some help on how to properly pair food and wine.

Montilla

Located in the Campiña Sur region of Southern Cordoba, Montilla was a city where many famous and notable historical figures, such as Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, “The Great Captain”; Garcilaso de la Vega, El Inca; John of Avila, Doctor of the Church and Apostle of Andalusia; and the painter José Santiago Garnelo y Alda, lived and had rich experiences.

The Alvear family arrived to Montilla from Nájera (La Rioja) in the 1729. The original winecellar and part of the house are located in the Old Quarter of Montilla.

The family has always been too close to this city, as all members have shown during all these centuries. People like Don Diego de Alvear and Ponce de León or Don Francisco de Alvear y Gómez de la Cortina (VII Condde de la Cortina) have left and indelible mark.

The historical tour of the city will guide you to the family house and other buildings related to our own history.
